3 Ways You Can Stay Protected from Spyware

How would you feel if there was a stranger going through your mail? You’d probably be aggravated upon catching them on the act, wouldn’t you? But what if… Do you never gain the knowledge of what they’re doing? They would have access to your personal information, your purchases, your utility bills… everything. That’s a troubling thought, isn’t it? Well, that is what spyware is capable of doing.

But before we head into the specifics, let’s take a short run through of what spyware is. To put it simply, it is a type of malicious software that can infect your computer, tweak around your internet browser, and steal your usernames and passwords for your online accounts. With that kind of information in the wrong hands, you can lose your work documents, your assets, and at times, it can even put you at risk for other more troubling situations.

Now, that you have a better grasp of what spyware is and what it can do, let’s move on to the ways on how you can protect yourself from it.

To stay safe from spyware, Advise IT Solutions recommends that you should always…

  1. Use your internet with caution.

Be wary of the type of websites that you visit; some of them may come with malicious links that would lead you to download spyware.
To prevent this from happening, you should always inspect a link given before clicking on it. And in case you need to download some files from the internet, be sure to do it only from trusted websites and never from unknown sources. Remember, it’s always better to be safe than to be sorry.

  2. Mind your pop-ups.

What are pop-ups? They are those small dialog boxes that often appear in the middle of your screen when you browse a certain site. Be careful when you decide to select the “OK” or “Agree” option, though! Most of the time it would lead you to install malware on your computer. At times, some stubborn popups may have “fake” red “X” or “Close” button, which, you might think will close the popup but may instead still install the malware.

To avoid this, simply close the browser tab using browser’s “X” button or better still close the browser itself. That should exit the tab or browser and free you from dealing with the pop-up.

  3. Keep your operating system updated.

Updating the operating system of your computer may take a long time. And in most cases, you’d probably even be tempted to skip it. But you shouldn’t!

These updates are given by your software provider for a reason; and that is to help keep you safe from spyware, viruses, and other malicious programs.
